Autumn Salon
Call for Entries
14th - 28th November 2008
Islington Arts Factory invites recent arts graduates, emerging talent
and local Islington artists to exhibit at the Autumn Salon exhibition.
This is an opportunity to showcase new 2-dimensional work (drawing,
painting, photography, print etc.) alongside up and coming artists and
establish networks with like-minded individuals.
The Autumn Salon has been designed in keeping
with IAF's ethos of welcoming a diverse variety of contributors and
creating a launch pad for emerging talent. Curation of the show will
take its inspiration from 17th century French Salons to create a busy
atmosphere and promote formal and informal discussions around contemporary
art themes. There will be networking opportunities and workshops in-built
in this two-week live forum event.
A panel of practising professional artists will
also award prizes of excellence that will include art materials and
vouchers to successful exhibitors.
To apply please email us the following:
* A jpeg image that best shows your work. The
maximum image resolution should be 150 dpi
* Details of your work: title, date, dimensions, and materials.
* A short artist's statement of no more than 50 words that will be included
in the accompanying information for the show.
You are welcome to propose a selection of works.
Send all submissions to iaf_art@btconnect.co.uk
and we will contact you once selected.
Deadline for entries is 17th September 2008 at
5p.m.
Please note there will be a fee of £10 for each work selected
exhibited to cover admin charges.

No Constitution
13 September - 3 October
Nae Bunthita, Emily Carris, Robin Dring, Rebecca Galer, Simon Robinson
Great Britain does not have a written
constitution, we are both flexible and
vulnerable as our lives are ruled by
precedence. No Constitution is a discourse
on the changes and altercations that have
made Britain the place it is today. With this
Britain ever present in our minds we are
free to question the effects of our industrial
past and the underlying uncertainty of our
precarious future. Uncomfortable questions
of Britains people boundlessly arise, issues
of an environmental and industrial past,
present and future.

The Black Art of Making Mas
10 October - 26 October
Glorious Backstage Arts
& IAF
Ever wondered where the fantastic costumes at Notting Hill Carnival
come from? Making Mas is an exhibition series that explores the history
and development of Black British Carnival Arts from the traditional,
subversive themes and characters of old Mas to the exotic fusion of
Afro-Caribbean and Latin inspired designs we see today. Masquerade costumes,
images and backstage arts create this maverick art form as Islington
Arts Factory joins Glorious Backstage Arts to celebrate Black History
month.
Metamorphosis
inconclusion
31 October - 7 November
Jane Archer, Holly Chadd,
Jeremy Evans
In Joyces A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man a Jesuit pries
says: The object of the artist is the creation of the beautiful.
What the beautiful is is another question.
Starting from the position of flux, working
with and in a space that is defined by its
original purpose and role in the community
that has shifted in concept, one question
raises another, creating a nebulous state
of inconclusion and ambiguity. Each artist
tries to put this question to the work, to
themselves and to the viewer. If the second
question is what is beautiful?, the first
question must be What is the object of the
artist? Presenting a range of works across
a variety of media, this exhibition attempts
to find a moment of certainty.
